University Scholars Application

Up to forty finalists will be selected on the basis of this application to interview for admission to the Program. Interviews will be held on Sunday, October 22nd, 2017. We are unable to consider applicants who will not be available on this date; skype interviews will be available on a very limited basis (for example, for students currently studying abroad). Students applying for the Global Scholars Program are not eligible.

Twenty scholars will be chosen from the pool interviewed. All chosen scholars must enroll in the University Scholars Seminar for Spring 2018 (Tuesdays 2:30-5:00); therefore, students committed to study abroad or off-campus internships for Spring 2018 should not apply. For more information, please contact the Honors Program at 785-864-4225 or honors@ku.edu.

All application materials must be submitted by 11:59 pm Thursday, September 21st, 2017.

Essay Component for 2017-2018

The University Scholars program is highly selective. Students are chosen carefully to ensure a diverse mix of academic and personal interests. We are interested in knowing both what you believe you would bring to this group of Scholars and also how you think you would benefit from being a member of this program.

Provide a personal statement addressing your contributions to the group and what you hope to gain.

Some specifics you may wish to address include:

  • What are your intellectual interests and aspirations?
  • What experiences or activities have shaped your thinking?
  • How does this year’s course topic relate to your own interests and/or experiences?
  • Why do you want to participate in the University Scholars Program?

Your aim should be to provide an “intellectual portrait” of yourself, explaining how you fit the goals of the University Scholars Program.   (Please put your name on your essay.)

Names and titles of two persons being asked for recommendation materials.  One recommendation must come from a KU course instructor.  The review committee strongly suggests that both recommendations come from KU course instructors, although the second recommendation could also be completed by someone who knows you and your academic abilities well.

By submitting your application, you agree to waive your right to letters of recommendation. See the Application FAQs.

NOTE: This system does not email your recommenders. It is your responsibility to contact them and provide the link for them to submit their recommendation.

Remember, you are responsible for contacting your recommenders with the link to this online recommendation form and for making sure that recommendations are submitted (no automatic email is generated by this form). Recommendations will not be processed until after the deadline; if materials are missing, the student will be given the opportunity to contact the recommender.
