Teaching Honors Seminars
Overview
This 1-credit-hour course is designed to serve as the cornerstone of the Honors First Year Experience in the Honors Program. Students with similar academic interests will enroll in a section of their choice. The content and format strive to strike a balance between an introduction to college life and an introduction to academic life. The course will introduce students to a few key themes and issues in their academic area to help them gain a basic understanding of their studies early on in their academic experience. The courses will reflect the instructors’ academic interests within their fields, introduce students to campus resources and foster skills in written and oral expression.
Goals of the Honors Seminar
Required Foci
- Introduce an academic area through a specific topic germane to the instructor’s specialty, an analysis of part of a discipline aimed at giving students a better understanding of the discipline at large
- Advance proficiency in reading, writing, discussion
- Strongly encourage students to attend the Honors Seminar Symposium
Recommended Foci
- Acquaint with campus resources (your assistant will take care of this)
- Develop research literacy
- Introduce the idea that involvement is a key to success: service, leadership, and engagement in the intellectual and artistic programming available to them
- Foster building of the Honors community
